Should You Be Tested for an STD/STI before You have an Abortion?

Absolutely. STD/STI testing prior to an abortion is essential for the future of your health. During an abortion, as well as insertion of an IUD, bacteria moves from the vagina and cervix upward into the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes. This bacteria can lead to an abscess in the fallopian tube or ovary causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, or PID. Long-term problems can occur if PID is not treated promptly. According to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, PID is an infection of the female reproductive organs and it is diagnosed in more than one million women each year in the United States.

So what causes PID?

The two STIs, gonorrhea and chlamydia, are the main cause of PID – and the symptoms a woman may experience with these two infections can be very vague but the possible effect on your future health can be very serious and include:

Infertility – one in ten women with PID becomes infertile.

Future ectopic pregnancy – when a fertilized egg begins to grow in the fallopian tube rather than the uterus. If the tube ruptures, it may life-threatening bleeding into the woman’s abdomen and pelvis.

Chronic pelvic pain – PID may lead to long-lasting pelvic pain in some women.

Although we do not offer testing at Next Step Pregnancy Services at this time, we will in the near future. Until then, we are equipped to offer you nearby referrals where you will receive free or greatly reduced testing fees.

If you are considering abortion please get tested for these easily treatable infections first!
